Completion of Small Animal Hospital at Birstall

The Brief.

NWD Architects were approached to support the major extension of the existing Vets4Pets surgery within the busy retail Pets at Home unit in Leeds. The existing surgery required an extensive refit along with designed-for-purpose animal wards, surgical rooms and a spacious Prep area to support the increased footprint of the proposed Small Animal Hospital.

NWD’s Approach.

NWD was responsible for the production of the new design concept along with detailed design for the enhanced Prep area. Keeping the central block of the consult rooms intact, the rest of the space in the existing surgery and mezzanine floor was re-imagined to form the substantial hospital.

Involving a detailed drawing package, site visits and in-depth discussions with the practice owners, along with the Project Manager for Vets4Pets, the design evolved over a number of months. Visuals were created to illustrate some of the more detailed rooms and areas along with 3d models to further demonstrate the design.

The Outcome.

The finished Small Animal Hospital is sleek, extensive and well designed for use by both its occupants and users. The clinical areas are spacious and designed around a unique central Prep Tower. The animal wards use Casco kennels and have plenty of space for on-the-spot examinations when necessary. Storage was a critical aspect of the design, so alcoves and room layouts were detailed to increase circulation space whilst still maintaining increased storage requirements.
