Designing new stores for Hobbycraft, the UK’s largest arts and crafts retailer

The brief

Founded in 1995, Hobbycraft is now a nationwide business with over 100 stores, making it the largest arts and crafts retailer in the UK. NWD Architects has worked with Hobbycraft for several years on the brand’s ongoing programme of new sites or relocations. NWD worked on the development of seven new stores in 2021 in Leicester, Sutton Coldfield, Wimbledon, Rochester, Belfast, Exeter and Chichester.

NWD’s approach

The NWD team conducted feasibility studies for new store developments within Hobbycraft standard retail footprints, drawing up concept designs, followed by full detailed development drawings for seven new stores, to secure planning application approval and building regulations approvals.

The outcome

Each project took approximately three months to complete and was delivered on schedule for the opening dates. NWD worked closely with Hobbycraft’s own retail team and project managers, as well as specialist consultants and client-appointed suppliers.
