Designing a new Pets at Home store, Handforth

The brief

Pets at Home is the leading pet store company in the UK. NWD Architects has supported the company for over 20 years, with the development of 400 plus stores nationwide. NWD Architects provides Pets at Home with a full design service that includes qualified Architects, Technicians and Building Control Consultants.

Handforth was selected as the site for the proposed new Pathfinder concept Pets at Home store. The 900 sq. m. multi-services superstore includes a Vets4Pets surgery, a groom room, mezzanine floor level, support and office space.

NWD’s approach

The NWD Architects team was entirely responsible for the production of the new Pets At Home concept store, preparing a new detail drawing package for the whole development and reporting directly to the Project Manager. A large part of the project included daily liaison with all the consultants involved. These included Planning, Building Control, Structural Engineers, Designers, Pets at Home retail team and all suppliers.

The outcome

The main challenge of this project was positioning the main concept areas perfectly, in order to allow for uninterrupted access for customers and staff. NWD Architects’ Pets Construction Management Team worked closely with all the consultants involved in this scheme to take the new Pathfinder concept from initial design concept into development.
